How Invisalign Works

Instead of the metal brackets and wires used by traditional braces, Invisalign uses sets of clear plastic aligners to shift your teeth into a straighter position. You’ll wear each set for roughly two weeks at a time, advancing to new sets to match your teeth’s progress. Each set is designed to gradually shift a small portion of your smile until the whole thing is perfectly aligned—however, this can only happen if the aligners are worn frequently! You won’t have to visit us as often as you would with traditional braces, either, but you’ll still need to come in every six weeks or so to pick up your new aligners and have us check that everything’s going smoothly.

How Long Does Invisalign Take?

To put it simply, the timeline for Invisalign varies between patients because everyone has different dental needs. On average, the entire process can take anywhere from 12 to 18 months, which is significantly shorter than the traditional braces timeline—which is often well over 24 months! However, one of the biggest factors that contributes to the length of the treatment process is patient compliance. The trays need to be worn for 22 hours every day in order to successfully shift your teeth as intended!

Does It Hurt to Get Invisalign?

One of the biggest concerns that most patients have with any sort of dental treatment is pain—but with Invisalign, you’re embarking on a significantly more comfortable path than traditional braces. That said, you can still expect some minor soreness; after all, your teeth are being shifted into new positions! However, this discomfort can easily be alleviated by using a cold compress or taking over-the-counter pain relievers.

Can You Eat with Invisalign?

The short answer here is no; you shouldn’t eat anything while you’re wearing your aligners! However, once they’ve been removed, you can eat virtually anything you want. In fact, this is one reason that patients love this awesome teeth-straightening solution: no dietary restrictions! Just be sure to enjoy sugary items in moderation, to prevent tooth decay.

Who is a Candidate for Invisalign?

You’ll have to schedule a consultation with us for Dr. Lakhani to determine if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign. Invisalign can correct crooked, crowded, gapped, and misaligned teeth of the upper and lower arches, as well as some bite problems. Age is a pretty important eligibility factor, and the treatment is typically better for teens and adults as the jaw and teeth are still rapidly changing while transitioning from childhood to teenage years. Since patients must also wear their aligners frequently, younger patients might have trouble adhering to the mandatory wear time.

What Happens After Invisalign?

Once you’ve completed the last aligners in the series, you’ll visit us to verify your results. We need to ensure that your teeth have moved into their optimal positions before briefing you on what maintenance your new smile will need. You’ll be given a retainer, and based on your specific needs, we’ll instruct you on how often it needs to be worn. Over time, you’ll have to wear it less frequently.

Why choose Distinctive Smiles for your Invisalign Treatment

You get a dentist you can talk with about your goals for your smile. Dr. Lakhani personally writes your prescription for your aligners and he will see you throughout your treatment to make sure you are progressing through the process as expected. We track the progress at each visit and make note of any areas of concern. If you have questions regarding your treatment at any time Dr. Lakhani is a phone call or appointment away. With his personalized care there is nothing left to chance on your results. Invisalign uses the most up to date materials to manufacture their aligners and retainers which make wearing their aligners much more comfortable and therefore you wear them regularly and will see quicker results. There are other options out there for clear aligners. Most of those options are not dentist supervised, you do not get a professional scan or impression to make the aligners, typically you take the impression at home yourself and send in for the aligners and nobody's there when you have a question or concern.
